Term one Overview
September 2020 to January 2021
Math 7 Concepts covered:
Speaking and Listening
Daily listening and speaking occurs through A/B partner talk. Students have a partner, a question is asked and partners are to discuss the answer. Students are then called upon to report out what they were talking about. This ensures all students are engaged, all students report out to the class orally and all students must listen to what others say. Through this we work on:
Writing: This term we have been focusing on descriptive writing through essays and descriptive paragraphs. Focus has been on using a strong opening sentence, a variety of sentence lengths and patterns with a variety of sentence starters and transitional phrases. We have tried to include some figurative language and powerful descriptive words in the writing.
Students have also written research assignments for our SS and Science units.
Reading: This term we have focused on short stories, non-fiction articles ,and a non fiction reading inquiry unit. Prior to reading, students make predictions and ask relevant questions. During reading of material (The Lightning Thief), students use various strategies to aid in their comprehension (making connections, visualization, asking questions, making inferences with support from the text). After reading, they complete a meaningful task to demonstrate their understanding. Assessment focus: identifying the main idea, finding supporting information, making inferences with text justification and determining the main message from the story or article.
Science: A study of adaptations within an animal or an ecosystem of their choice was the main focus of Science this term. Students studied how organisms have evolved over time, and that all organisms need space, food, water, and access to resources in order to survive. Students also looked at the natural process by which certain traits that have a greater fitness for their environment lead to a reproductive advantage; this process happens within a population over time because of genetic variation.
Social Studies: Students studied Early People and researched about the evolution and changes for each group of identified people. In small groups, students created an Early People booklet using Book Creator. Mesopotamia, the first known early civilizations was studied. Students were able to show the significance of people, places, dates, or developments at particular times and places using a map and through written explanations.
Fine Arts Education:
Art rotations: Students learned about colour and mixing colour by reflecting on work, exploring with paint, and creating artistic works based on other artistic styles.
Drama: Students explored and took creative risks needed for the expression of dramatic meaning through a variety of activities including improvisation, tableau, role-play, and mime type activities
Physical Education: This term we played a variety of minor games, worked on different strength, endurance and flexibility exercises during our circuit training and learned some skills in volleyball. Students will be given a daily mark based on sportsmanship, preparedness, participation, skill. Skills for the different sports will be taught with culminating games at the mid part to the lessons. Attitude towards classmates and teachers and personal effort will be emphasized.
ADST
