Overview for September to December Grade 6/7
Language Arts
In reading this term students learned to apply appropriate reading comprehension strategies to increase their understanding of a fictional book, The Giver, to extend their thinking. Students reflected upon this novel and wrote reflections of deeper thinking questions in their journals.Students used writing and design processes to plan, develop, and create engaging and meaningful essays. Students used speaking and listening to share their experiences, opinions, and ideas.
Social Studies
In term one we learned what culture is through a study of the Secwepemc culture as well as the importance of personal and cultural identity. We mapped the Shuswap territory and compared it with our modern map, researched cultural activities and foods that were eaten, and learned about how the Canadian government tried to eliminate the First Nation's culture through residential schools. Students demonstrated their understanding of the issues through a comparative essay of the Secwepemc culture and our culture as well as through a round table discussion on cultural identity theft.
Math
In math this term students were able to use divisibility rules to determine factors and multiples of a number. Students then learned about fractions and how to compare, order, and make equivalent fractions with both like and unlike denominators. Students then continued to apply equivalent fractions when adding and subtracting them. Students were also able to change improper fractions into mixed numbers in lowest terms. Students continued throughout term one working on an independent math program called Mastery of the Basics.
Physical Education and Health Education
In PE this term, students are encouraged to put forward their best effort, have a positive attitude, and demonstrate appropriate skill. Students have learned a variety of strengthening exercises and a variety of running activities. As well, students developed appropriate volleyball skills. Students also participated in a variety of cooperative games and were shown a weekly exercise that help develop stronger muscles. Students also learned about so called healthy drinks with added sugar..
Fine Arts and Music
In Art this term, students used a variety of mediums and methods to produce creative works of art.
In Fine Arts, Music, and ASDT this year, students will rotate through the following three classes:
Music: students will learn the basics while playing the guitar. This includes basic chords and basic strumming and picking patterns.
Fine Arts: students will use a variety of techniques to create several more complex projects, including using clay and water colours.
ASDT: students are learning the basics of hand sewing. This includes how to sew on buttons and how to use a backstitch to produce a stuffed frog.
Science:
In the first term students explored what climate change is, how it is causing extreme weather events, impacting animals and what we can do to help slow it. Students were shown how to put together an annotated bibliography, how to collect notes, and use this information to strategically plan a walking story to communicate ideas through a collaboratively written puppet play.
French (Ms. Lofgren)
French marks this term are comprised of three categories. Categories include, participation, individual and/or group activities, and review quizzes. Assessments and activities are completed in a variety of ways. Students are asked to show their learning through a number of different listening, viewing, speaking, and writing activities. In term one, students have focused their learning on “Ma classe et moi,” participating and completing activities based on themselves and their class. Students have also been using technology to view, research, and collect information on Francophone communities in Canada and around the world. Students will continue to use the Echos Pro learning guides throughout the year to develop literacy and maximize their success in French.
Career Education
The focus this term was on goal setting skills, organization, and time management. These strategies are very important to learn in order to be successful with their learning. Leadership skills are also put into play as students participate in a variety of jobs around the school.
