Overview for December 2017 to March 2018 Grade 6/7
Language Arts
In reading this term students read non fiction articles using the Readworks program and learned to summarize important information. Students practiced their oral reading throughout this unit to improve fluency while reading.
Students completed several writing pieces this term, including an Ancient Roman online booklet summarizing several topics using their own language .
Social Studies
In Social Studies this term, students learned about Ancient Rome and the importance of this earliest civilization to our way of life as it is today. The main focus this term was on the process of researching, note collection, and sentence formation when gathering information for this in-depth project. Once the sentence were created, students used Google slides to create a professional looking "booklet" outlining 7 different aspects of this culture.. Students also created a live theater snapshot that showed a part of the daily life of the ancient Romans.
Math
In math this term students learned students learned to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers with decimals and complete word problems that involved multi-steps. Students were able to apply these concepts while using percents to calculate tip, tax, interest, and discounts when using money.
Physical Education
In PE this term, students are encouraged to put forward their best effort, have a positive attitude, and demonstrate appropriate skill while participating in our dance unit and creating their own dance. Students learned the skills and basic game play for basketball. Students continued on active, aerobic type of activities throughout the term to elevate their heart rates. Students also learned basic gymnastics moves and put them together to complete a simple routine.
In Health, Students are learning about the importance of healthy eating and how it is important to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle.
Fine Arts and Music
Fine Arts:
Visual Arts ) Students create a number of different pieces of artwork using line, shape, space, texture, and colour. We also modeled art work after cubist artist Pablo Picasso.
(Mr. Sandhu) In Mr. Sandhu's rotation, students did a variety of lessons using the baritone ukulele. Students developed the skills and techniques needed to learn to strum and pick the ukulele to play basic songs. Students also participated in a variety of debate type situations enhancing their public speaking skills.
Sewing (Ms. Wiwchar) In sewing this term, students learned the basics of sewing on buttons and a back stitch to create a stuffed frog.
Science
In Science this term, students learned about Newton's Three Laws of Motion and completed a series of experiments to enhance their understanding of each.
French
French marks in term two are comprised of three categories. Categories include, participation, individual and/or group activities, and review quizzes. Assessments and activities are completed in a variety of ways. Students are asked to show their learning through a number of different listening, viewing, speaking, and writing activities. In term two, students used “Ca, c’est ma journee,” the Echos Pro learning guide. While using this guide, students completed assignments based on in-school and after-school activities. Another main focus in term two was “Carnaval de Quebec,” students learned many different activities that take place at the carnival. After learning about the carnival, students worked together with classmates to put on a similar carnival for the whole school. Students will continue to use technology and the Echos Pro learning guides throughout term three to further develop their French.
Career Education
Students were asked to volunteer within the school or the community and try to work towards two hours of volunteer experience. Once completed students were able to relate this experience to the importance of future career skills gained from this. Students continue to work on project management and balancing their homework schedule with their after school commitments. Using the Weebly to complete assignments on time is of vital importance. Students continued with their leadership skills as they participate in a variety of jobs around the school.
Applied Science
Students have learned to use a a variety of different methods when presenting projects for their class assignments. Students learned how Google Slides, iMovie, youTube, Green Screen tools can be used to present their projects in a unique, creative, and polished way..
Students learned how to use block coding to program a Sphero Robot. Students were able to problem solve and maneuver the Sphero through a variety of challenges.
